Magazines can be either digital or print copies and although we are in an age that is completely moving towards digital, there is something special about holding a physical magazine, flipping through the pages to see the images printed on paper and to read through the information. I personally think, although the digital age has helped cut down on the use of paper, which hugely contributes to saving the environment, once in a while, it is good to get printed magazines and flip through the pages.

Diamondback squid are widespread in tropical and subtropical oceans, preying on fish, other squid and crustaceans near the surface. In November, hundreds gather off Anilao to spawn. Chromatophores organs just below the skin contain elastic sacs of pigment that stretch rapidly into discs of colour when the muscles around them contract; recent research suggests that they may also reflect light. Deeper in the skin, iridophores reflect and scatter light, adding an iridescent sheen. Selected from over 49, entries from around the world, the winners of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition were revealed during an online awards ceremony live-streamed from the Natural History Museum, London on 13 October.

To capture a spectacular image of the Australian bushfire using drone photography, the son of zoo and TV legend Steve Irwin must be the family mascot genus, Crocodilia from with countless wildlife — with an estimated more than a billion animals — lost in the blaze that transforms the landscape, the image carries a heavy message. As smoke rose from the horizon of the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve in Cape York, Queensland, Irwin identified the opportunity: a protected land that supports more than 30 ecosystems, including some endangered species.
